Ministry of Health and Welfare(MoHW, Minister Neunghoo Park) announced that the ‘2017 International Conference on Population’ under the theme of ‘Low Fertility, Challenges and Responses in the Era of Ageing Population’ will be held at Lotte Hotel Seoul for two days, on October 19 and 20.

The conference will be co-hosted by MOHW-Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHASA) -Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) - United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Focusing on the worsening problem of low fertility in the Republic of Korea and Japan, the conference will discuss the necessity of international cooperation to respond to the worldwide issues related to low fertility and aging population.

The conference will be attended by government officials and representatives including H.E. Neunghoo Park, Minister of Health and Welfare of Korea; H.E. Masaji Matsuyama, Minister of Promoting Dynamic Engagement of All Citizens of Japan; Dr. Angel Gurria, Secretary-General of OECD, Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of UNFPA; and H.E.  Renowned population experts, domestic or foreign such as Dr. Duseop Kim, Director of Asian Population Association and Dr. Zolt Speder, President of The European Association for Population Studies(EAPS), will present their views on low fertility and aging populations and suggest future policy options.

Minister Park of Korea will have a Ministerial Meeting with his Japanese counterpart, exchanging their views on the agenda and discussing bilateral cooperation options to respond to the population issues.

Minister Park said that the International Conference on Population is a good venue to share the seriousness and severity of low fertility and aging society.

“Especially for South Korea and Japan, which are all facing extremely low fertility, it will be highly beneficial to share their experiences with relevant policies in order to improve and supplement them in the near future.”
