¨ Reform of the health insurance payment system

-To ensure that medical institutions strengthen their capability to quickly and effectively control and prevent emerging infectious diseases, the Korean government is planning to reform the current health insurance payment system as follows:

1) The government will continually assess how medical institutions prepare for or respond to the outbreak of infectious diseases. It will give incentives or impose penalties depending on the result.

2) The government will set a health insurance fee for combined medical treatments for infected patients, as part to increase the number of staff specializing in infection control and to support the activities of medical institutions to prevent infectious diseases.

3) The government will adjust the current health insurance fee for negative pressure isolation rooms, in order to add to high-quality medical facilities for treating infections.

4) The government will set a health insurance fee for medical equipment such as protective gears.

-The government will present specific counter-plans until this week, and hold a discussion on them before the end of June.

¨ Financial support for hospitals

-The government will support 16 billion won for the hospitals suffering huge losses because of MERS.

-Currently, the government is working to set a specific criterion for support.

-Hospitals under strict control in urgent need of support are highly likely to be the first priority for the payments.

¨ Four more National Safe Hospitals

-The newly added hospitals are Yonsei University Severance Hospital (Yongin), Eulji University Hospital, Hallym University Medical Center and Konyang University Hospital.

-They are where MERS cases occurred or visited, but after the end of the incubation or quarantine period, have actively conducted regular disinfection measures.

-Accordingly, the number of National Safe Hospitals increased to 280.
