Strengthening Korea-ASEAN Health Cooperation

 

- Minister Cho KyooHong will co-chair Korea-ASEAN and ASEAN Plus Three Health Ministers Meetings -

 

- A joint statement is expected to be adopted, emphasizing strengthened regional health cooperation through digital health initiatives -

 

Minister Cho KyooHong of the Ministry of Health and Welfare will attend the 2nd Korea-ASEAN* Health Ministers Meeting and the 10th ASEAN Plus Three (Korea, Japan, and China) Health Ministers Meeting in Vientiane, Laos, on Friday, August 9. He will discuss strategies to enhance regional health security and advance health using digital health technologies. Both meetings will be co-chaired by Korea and Laos, with the Korea-ASEAN meeting marking the second ministerial meeting since 2022.

 

* ASEAN: Association of Southeast Asian Nations, comprising 10 member states (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam)

 

Minister Cho will emphasize the significance of utilizing digital technology in addressing the evolving healthcare landscape, which is characterized by global aging trends and emerging public health challenges. He will then propose a vision* for future cooperation that leverages Korea's strengths in this area to gain support from ASEAN member states and achieve specific agreements in the form of a joint statement.

 

* (Short-term) Consulting on public health information systems in ASEAN and capacity development for digital transformation in the health sector, (Mid-to-Long-term) Supporting the development of digital transformation strategies for ASEAN's health and medical sectors

 

The vision proposed by Korea is set to be adopted as the joint statement, and Minister Cho will seek support and active participation from ASEAN member states through the meetings.

 

Prior to the visit to Laos, Minister Cho will visit Singapore to discuss health industry cooperation, including research and development (R&D) in health. His visit will include meetings with the Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Health of Singapore, local scientists and business leaders, and the Chairman of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research. ///
