The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister Cho, KyooHong) said it is conducting a “Survey on Isolated and Reclusive Young Adults” from July 17 (Monday) to August 31 (Thursday).

It is the first nationwide survey on over 5,000 isolated and reclusive young adults. Anyone aged between 19 and 39 is eligible to take part in the survey. A preliminary survey will be conducted on all participants to determine whether they fit the criteria as isolated and reclusive. If classified as isolated and reclusive in the preliminary survey, they will receive a text message containing a link to the survey once they give their prior consent.

< Who are isolated and reclusive young adults? >

Who is an isolated young adult?

A young adult who has difficulty forming meaningful relationships with others, and cannot ask for

help or find it difficult to do so when they need help

Who is a reclusive young adult?

A young adult who lives in seclusion by staying in a room, house, or limited space and has little or no

interpersonal or social relationships or interactions.

The survey is designed to gather facts and information on the early stage of isolation and reclusion (i.e. when, duration, reasons, etc.) different aspects of isolation and reclusion (i.e. daily activities, eating, sleeping, social relationships and support systems), and awareness of the status of isolation and reclusion and welfare needs. Based on the findings, in 2024, MOHW plans to launch a pilot project geared to support isolated and reclusive young adults. Apart from the project, if survey participants are found in need of emergency welfare and psychological support, they will be immediately connected to necessary support with their prior consent.

In addition to the online questionnaire, Focus Group Interview (FGI) will be conducted for young adults who have experienced isolation and reclusion and their families, as well as officials from private support organizations and local municipalities to collect more detailed and in-depth information on isolated and reclusive young adult’s life situation that is missing from the questionnaire and to analyze policy needs.

Choi Jong-kyun, Deputy Minister for Population Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “There have been some similar surveys on isolated and reclusive young adults, but those fell short of gathering sufficient information on their lives and specific welfare needs nationwide. This is the first nationwide survey to take an in-depth look into the lives of isolated and reclusive young adults who have long been in the social blind spot and to identify their complex policy needs. The findings of the survey will be actively used to design support policies geared to the welfare of isolated and reclusive young adults.” ///
