Over the 10 years of antibiotics use assessment, preion rate was reduced by more than 20% point

- still 2,668 clinics showing over 80% preion rate

□ The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA, President; Kang, Yoon-Goo) disclosed the result of the
evaluation of the appropriateness of drug reimbursement for the first half of 2010.

○ This year marks the tenth year since the use of antibiotics was first assessed in 2001 as part of the drug reimbursement evaluation.

○ The antibiotics preion rate fell by 20% point from 74% in 2002 to 54% in 2010 for acute upper respiratory infection, which is, in most cases,
a viral disease.
The preion rate for clinics, among different types of medical service providers, declined by about 19.7% point from 74.1% to 54.4%.

○ The clinical effect from the implementation of the drug reimbursement evaluation is a reduction in the number of antibiotics preions for
patients with acute upper respiratory infection by some 4.5 million a year on average, which thereby contributed to lowering resistance to antibiotics.
The economic effect from the preion reduction amounts to an estimated annual average of 14.1 billion KRW.

○ The evaluation of the appropriateness of drug reimbursement conducted for the first half of 2010 revealed that there are still as many as 2,668 clinics
with an antibiotics preion rate for acute upper respiratory infection higher than 80%. The rate also varied within the same medical
department across regions.

○ Going forward, HIRA will step up the management of antibiotics use in order to attain 50%, a goal for 2012 set by the National Antibiotic Resistance Management Committee (supervised by the Office of the Prime Minister).
